White

It’s very important for people to really understand what they are reading and especially so when giving translations. The Arabic language is like no other and therefore needs careful understanding, especially so for the translating and publishing of things.

If the arabs used red to describe non arabs who are white , then why did they use white to describe Arabs. The answer is in the statements of the scholars and the ahadith themselves.

It was very clear to the arabs and the scholars of the past that the arabs and the non arabs from Persia and Rome looked significantly different.

This should be clear for everyone to understand that white and red were used differently to describe different colours and signify different races of people.

Abu Tayyib Al Laghwi (350 AH) said in his book ,Book of opposites in the speech of the Arabs ( page 40)

”White is only used for people (to mean) being far from being impure and free from defects.”.

h

Ibn Mandour, the author of Lisan al Arab narrates from Al Azhari on page 209

x
“When the Arabs say that a man is white or a woman is white , they mean that he has a pure, clean, free from ugliness…

They don’t mean that he has a white complexion, but they mean that someone is honourable and pure and clean.

When they say that a person’s face is white, they mean that his complexion is free from marks and a type of blackness that is unattractive ”.

h

Al Thaa’lab is quoted in Lisan Al Arab, he said,

” The Arabs do not say a man is white to mean that he is white in colour. It is only said to mean that the person is pure and free from any defects.”

In Al Atheer said in Al Nihaayah Fee Ghareeb Al Hadeeth , Chapter 1 page 438

” When they intended to mean pure white they meant  red,  and in that saying is an error for verily they used the word abyadh (or white) in the colours of people and other than them”

However he also supports the idea of Abyadh not having the literal meaning here :

In Al Atheer said in Al Nihaayah Fee Ghareeb Al Hadeeth , Chapter 3 page 354

”Al Ghurra ; plural Al Agharr : whiteness of the face: he meant the whiteness of their bright faces with light on the day of judgement”

Example to show when the meaning of Abyadh actually meant a very white complexion

Ibn Asaakir narrates in Tarikh Al Damashq Chapter 12:

Mu’awiya’s slave Khadij al Hazi said that Mu’awiya bought a fair complexioned /very white and beautiful slave girl

We know that Abyadh meant very white here from the interpretation of the scholars because they made it apparent that the slave was Roman

Ibn Hajar narrates in his book Al Isaabah fee Tamyeez As Sahabah Chapter 4

Mu’awiya said, Call Abdullah bin Mas’adah al Fazari and he was Adam Shadeed Al Udmah Muaywah then he said (to Masa’dah)  whiten your progeny with this Roman slave woman.”

م

It is repated in again in Ibn Katheer’s Tafseer of the the Quran chapter 2.

Mu’awiya said, Call Abdullah bin Mas’adah al Fazari and he was Adam Shadeed Al Udmah Muaywah then he said  (to Masa’dah) whiten your progeny with this Roman slave woman.”

Alaamah Imaam al Dhahabi shows us how the word white was used to describe ARABS and what it meant.

In Seera A’laam Al Nubalaa, Chapter 2, page 168, Imaam Al Dhahabi , said,

If the Arabs said someone is white, they mean that he is a wheatish colour with a blackness that can be seen”.

ك

s

Al Qurtobi says similar to what Imam Al Dhahabi said in regards to white actually what white (abyadh) means when used as an actual colour to describe other ARABS.

being a dark colour especially when describing other Arabs.

Abu Al Abbaas Ahmed Ibn Umar Ibn Ibraheem Al Qurtobi says in his book Al Mufhim Chapter 6, page 139

” Verily As Sumurah is whiteness leaning to blackness”

j

Whoever used white to mean a pure white went against the standard usage of the word:

As Shehaab Al Khafaajy narrates in Chapter 4 , page 36 that Hareer said:

”The nickname of the Arabs and the non Arabs is black and red , (respectively) because the dominant colours amongst the Arabs is Udmah and Asmar. And the dominant colours amongst the non Arab is white and red. They say and what is meant by red here is, a pale white and whoever uses the terms the black and the white ( instead of red and black), has gone against the way the terms are used.”

s

Al Anbaari said similar to the above (way before) in his book Al Idaad on page 346

”It was said the red for the red and it was said a red man when it was actually a white man

Abu Umar Ibn Al Alaa said most people said black and red and it is more than the saying  black and white”
